Breath Of My Ancestors Minute 3-21-17

On this date March 21st, 1924 Charles Spurgeon Johnson held a meeting at the New York Civic Club bringing together Black poets, artist, musicians and forward thinking African American writers and publishers. The event became the maiden voyage of the Harlem Renaissance.

As a literary movement and social revolt against racism and Jim Crow laws, the Harlem Renaissance established the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined our expression. In the ten years after that social gathering more than sixteen black writers published over fifty volumes of poetry and fiction. African-Americans began to celebrate their heritage giving rise to poets like Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston and Paul Lawrence Dunbar.
